Nutrition is the science that investigates the relationship between physiological function and the essential elements of the foods we eat. According to Rebecca J. Donatelle, in her book, â€Å"My Health,† food provides â€Å"the chemicals we need for activity and body maintenance. Our bodies cannot synthesize certain essential nutrients, we must obtain them from the foods we eat.† What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet is crucial to how healthy, we are and how well our body functions; therefore, it is very important to adopt healthy eating habits. Healthy eating habits are essential to create a solid foundation for excellent health. This can be achieved by avoiding and cutting back the excess sugar and processed foods that we eat. Protein helps transport iron, oxygen, and nutrients, helps muscles to recover stronger than before as well as help the skin and hair cell to develop. Fiber, helps move foods through the digestive system, delays absorption of cholesterol and other nutrients and softens stools by absorption of water. Some substances such as fats and sugar can be misinterpreted as being harmful to the body. Nonetheless, fats and sugars are vital to the human body and without them, certain function in out body could not take place. What individual should emphasize on is to ensure a balance and adequate nutritional intake. It is crucial to do our best at getting the right quantities of all essential nutrients and minimize the risks of getting too much or too little of anything we eat. Nutritious foods help strengthen neurotransmitters that signal our brain the feeling of contentment. Not only will eating clean will leave us feeling content, healthy foods will also boost our energy whereas foods like sugar and refined grains will drain us. Eating well will not only benefit our overall health, but it will most definitely alter our physical appearance in a good way. Astronomy 101 - Big Numbers - Lesson 4 Its A Big Universe

Our universe is huge, larger than most of us can even imagine. In fact, our solar system is beyond the grasp of most of us to truly visualize in our minds eye. The systems of measurement we use just dont stand up to the truly immense numbers involved in gauging the size of the universe, the distances involved, and the masses and sizes of the objects it contains. However, there are some shortcuts to understanding those numbers, particularly those for distance. Lets take a look at measurement units that help put the immensity of the cosmos into perspective.   Distances in the Solar System In perhaps a nod to our old belief of Earth as the center of the universe, our first unit of measurement is based on the distance of our home to the sun. We are 149 million kilometers (93 million miles) from the Sun, but its much simpler to say were one astronomical unit (AU). In our solar system, the distance from the Sun to the other planets can be measured in astronomical units as well. For example, Jupiter is 5.2 AU away from Earth. Pluto is about 30 AU from the Sun. The outer edge of the solar system is at the boundary where the Suns influence meets the interstellar medium. That lies about 50 AU away. Thats about 7.5 billion kilometers away from us.   Distances to the Stars The AU works great within our own solar system, but once we start looking at objects outside our Suns influence the distances get very hard to manage in terms of numbers and units. Thats why we created a unit of measure based on the distance that light travels in a year. We call these units light-years, of course. A light-year is 9 trillion kilometers (6 trillion miles). The closest star to our solar system is actually a system of three stars called the Alpha Centauri system, consisting of Alpha Centauri, Rigil Kentaurus, and Proxima Centauri, which is actually slightly closer than her sisters. Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years from Earth. If we want to move beyond our neighborhood, our nearest neighboring spiral galaxy is Andromeda. At roughly 2.5 million light-years, its the most distant object that we can see without a telescope. There are two closer irregular galaxies called the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds; they lie at 158,000 and 200,000 light-years, respectively.   That distance of 2.5 million light years is a huge one, but merely a drop in the bucket compared to the size of our universe. In order to measure larger distances, the parsec (parallax second) was invented. A parsec is approximately 3.258 light-years. Along with the parsec, larger distances are measured in kiloparsecs (thousand parsecs) and megaparsecs (million parsecs). One other way to denote very large numbers is something called scientific notation. This system is based on the number ten and is written like this 1 Ãâ€" 101. This number equals 10. The small 1 located to the right of the 10 indicates how many times 10 is used as a multiplier. In this case once, so the number equals 10. So, 1 Ãâ€" 102 would be the same as 1 Ãâ€" (10 Ãâ€" 10) or 100. An easy way to figure a scientific notation number out is to add the same number of zeros at the end as the small number to the right of 10. So, 1 Ãâ€" 105 would be 100,000. Small numbers can be written this way as well by using a negative power (the number to the right of 10). In that case, the number will tell you how many places to move the decimal point to the left. When you say sports most people would either think professional or the best moments that occurred but there is also a dark side to sports that no one wants to talk about. Many things happened or are happening in sports such as racism, steroids, betting, sex scandals etc. but a topic that has been going on for a while is whether NCAA players should get paid. People have spoken out against this and even try to fight it but the NCAA won’t budge and says that they want to keep the amateurism and if they switch to paying players they would be buying the best players making it professional. Culture and traditions and discuss Essay Ferlinghetti wrote the 2 Scavengers poem in the mid 1950s when living in America in which he belonged to a group known as the Beat Generation. The poem is different and original in its style and format for how it is set out. It is about a neutral person (the narrator) looking on at a traffic light as two different class of people pull up. Ferlinghetti looks at these 2 vehicles and compares the two types of people within them. American society at the time was well known for being the land of opportunity, which is why Ferlinghetti was there. But within American society, there were to types of people: The upper class, and the lower class. This is what the poem looks at. It is entitled the two scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes. This tells us straight away what the poem is about, and suggests to us a comparison of the 2.It is set early in the morning, in San Francisco. Vehicles pull up to a traffic light as the narrator watches. One is a truck, with 2 garbage men on the back. The other is a Mercedes with a man and women both of the high class. The poet is stereotypical, and tries to judge the situation, thoughts and feelings of the 2. He assumes that the garbage men are jealous of the other 2 in the Mercedes and look towards them in envy as they gaze down, as if watching some odorless TV ad. The 2 in the Mercedes dont even look towards the truck. Ferlinghetti talks highly of the 2 in the Mercedes, with the3 piece linen suit and the women being casually coifed. On the other hand, he talks about the garbage man being grungy and compares them to gargoyles. Towards the end of the poem, Ferlinghetti saw that really, these 2 arent that different, hey look the same, but between the 4, only a career made them what they are. Across the small gulf in the high seas of this democracy is the final line which suggests to the reader that really there is only a small gap between these 4 people, and there is turbulent times within this world and some people get drawn a lucky ticket whereas others get the short straw and have to graft for a living. Ferlinghetti was part of a group of poets known as the beat generation. They were poets who migrated into America and got poems. Ferlinghetti saw America as the land of opportunity, and it was the inspiration for his poem. He wanted to show people that America isnt all its supposed to be, and people who come, may not make it, like the scavengers.  Ferlinghettis use of language is different to that of modern day. The poem itself is set out in a different style. It is not just one block of writing, but in differently placed lines. There are 40 lines, and only 9 start at the far left. All of these lines begin with a capital as well, the only words (other then nouns) to do so. This is a unique laying out for a poem. The language actually used is mostly that which is used today. However, he does use language which isnt heard in modern day society. Hip and coifed are to examples.  The title shows us straight away that the poem will be about the contrasts between two pairs of people. Scavengers is a derogatory term for the garbage men because it suggests that they live off the rubbish of others. However, Beautiful People is a compliment. So, right from the start, we feel the garbage men are at a disadvantage. However, the garbage men are looking down into the Mercedes. At face value this is clearly because the garbage truck is taller than the car, but is there an ironic message too? You might have expected the rich couple to look down on the dustmen, not the other way round. The poem is written in the present tense. This gives a sense of immediacy we feel that the poem is happening now. Stoics The point of being independent and not needing things is so that your happiness will not be destroyed by some accident outside of your control or by the malice of other human beings. The more your happiness depends on anything someone else can destroy, the less freedom you have - you are vulnerable to threats. In late antiquity many people felt insecure; governments were tyrannical, there was a lot of illegal violence, people died suddenly of disease or poison or through witchcraft or the malice of the gods. According to Aristotle, happiness consists primarily in worthwhile activity, but it does have some need of the goods of fortune. 'The good is something of one's own, that cannot easily be taken from one' (E.N., I.5 , 1095 b25). The Stoics, wanted to find something that could not possibly be taken away. Yet they did not want to live 'like dogs'. The solution is this: The good is to live in accordance with reason, and the power to do this cannot be taken away. Our external circumst ances may be the result of accident or the malice of others, but whether we act rationally given the circumstances is up to us. As for physical things, it is in accordance with reason to use them when they are available and useful, but not to become attached to them so that their loss causes distress. Possessions do not make you vulnerable unless you become attached to them. To live in accordance with reason is the Stoic conception of the good for man.
